Minimization of Overlapping Coverage in Wireless Sensor Networks with Area-aware Coverage

The aim of this paper is to minimize the overlapping coverage area in Wireless Sensor Networks with nodes having adjustable radius. We proposed Area-aware Coverage (A2C) that considers the sensing and transmission range of sensor nodes adjustable and uses six phases to detect and minimize overlapping coverage area. We also minimized the presence of redundant nodes and nodes with minimum coverage in any given area by turning them off and keeping a small subset of nodes alive. These nodes increase their radius in two stepsthe nodes increase their radius up to a threshold value and then doubles current radius avoiding overlapping or intersection using Venn Diagrams and Set Theory. As a result, large amount of power of nodes is saved and the network lifetime is increased. The analytical model and simulation of the approach showed that the approach achieves maximum coverage area with minimum number of nodes with least overlapping area among them.
